Structuration Theory and Information System Development - Frameworks for Practice

چکیده
Giddens’ structuration theory (ST) offers an account of social life in terms of social practices developing and changing over time and space, which makes no attempt to directly theorize the Information Systems (IS) domain. IS researchers have long been interested in it as a way of deepening understanding; a common application is the analysis of empirical situations using Giddens’ ‘dimensions of the duality of structure’ model. Other writers, most notably Orlikowski, have used it help theorize the field. Often the mode of research employed has been the interpretative case study. However, direct attempts to influence practice (an important component of working in an applied field), perhaps through the vehicle of action research, have yet to be undertaken. There are at least three serious problems with attempting this. The first is the inaccessibility of the theory to IS researchers and practitioners. The second is the absence of specific theories of technology. The third is Giddens’ own disinterest in practical uses of his work – which leaves no path to follow. This paper maps out that path, in the context of information system development, whilst providing frameworks for practice which are both more comprehensive than earlier attempts, and translated into forms of discourse which are accessible to the IS community.

Division of Labor and Structuration Theory: A Comparative and Theoretical Analysis of Marx’s and Durkheim’s Theories as the Early Approaches to Structuration Theory
To the extent that a society is to work, there exist a need for a cooperative process, including Weber’s and Merton’s note of common means and goals. But at the same time, there exist no societal process without involving conflict; (conflict in a dynamic and dialectical sense.) Dealing with this problematic situation the emergence of “division of labor”, as a compulsive social differentiation, ...
متن کاملFrom Theory to Practice: a Total Ergonomics Model of a Manufacturing System
The objective of this paper is three fold. First, a general framework for development of total ergonomics model is introduced. Second, it is described how total ergonomics model may be applied in practice to intensify the productivity and working conditions of manufacturing systems. Third, it is shown whether the total ergonomics model is superior to the conventional ergonomics approach. This s...
متن کاملStructuration Theory and Information Systems Research
Research on the social and organizational aspects of information systems often lacks an adequate theoretical and methodological basis. In this paper, we propose that structuration theory provides a broad conception of social action and human society which can be used as the basis for empiricallyorientated theory and research. A critique is given of some published work, which makes use of the th...
